Marketing Pollution: Will it really help reduce Global Warming?
Jul 12

well global warming is becoming a hot topic now. everyone has been made aware of the danger and wants to do something. the popular movie An Inconvenient Truth, discuses the dangers of global warming and how it will affect everything from water level to water currents to the frequency of natural disasters to ultimately climate. now there are two major proposals, if you will, on how the government might curb global warming.
- Carbon Tax
- Cap and Trade Legislation
Carbon tax involves simply increasing the cost to run a business or industry that emits a considerable amount carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and also increasing the cost of owning or using any goods or services that do the same.

In Cap and Trade legislation, each company is given a limit to the amount of gases they can emit and if they require more, they can purchase “carbon credits” from other companies who don’t emit enough to reach their given level.
now when i was reading through a couple articles, i am now well aware of the seriousness of global warming. An Inconvenient Truth clearly explains the dangers and what the future might be if no action is taken. then the huge questions began, how can we make such a project work? considering that the scope of the project is the whole world. lots of musical artists have began awareness tours to inspire people to do their parts as individuals. but like many campaigns how long will that last. then i began reading about the legal attempts to mitigate the likeliness of a grim future. when i read a couple articles , i got mad…why are we trying to make money of something that should be stopped entirely? then it dawned on me. a large portion of civilization is dependent on gas emitting technology and we may not have a green solution for each of them. many industries and factories that emit carbon dioxide into the atmosphere are crucial for the economy and well being of the society. until an efficient solution is found for the replacements of such industries, we’ll have to keep them alive. but the only thing we can do know is simply lower or control the amount of gases they emit. and since we live in a world where politics and economy strangle reason and emotion, putting taxes or charging for gas emissions may just prove to be a good temporary solution to reducing gas emissions…but then again this could just be another way to channel out money from people and also legally justify pollution. this may just lead to a vicious cycle that might lead us to a worse position…because like i say everything is unfortunately politics and economics, and buying this so called carbon credits may stupidly turn out to be more economical than switching to a greener technology…i really feel that people in power are not looking at the problem and how to solve, but rather how to make the problem work for them.
how long will we fight for solving global warming? what half planned solution will shut us up? can it really be helped?
i guess we’ll just have to hope for the best…
